Composting The Cup

Fresh Water Tests Spring-Summer 2022

We make Better for All cups with  a biobased material called PHBH. PHBH is certified to fully decompose safely in various land and water environments. To ensure that our cup meets the same standard, our chief cup officer tests our cups in different ambient conditions at different times of the year.

The progressive photodocumentation shown above is the decomposition of a Better for All 18 oz cup in pure PHBH, immersed in tap water in a glass container with a scoop of soil (approx 1″ of soil once it sifted to the bottom of the container).

WEEK 1
May 21, 2022
The cup looks relatively untouched, can be lifted out of the water without breaking, squeezed, and has few surface imperfections.

WEEK 8
July 19, 2022
The container displays microbial growth and activity throughout. The cup walls break when you lift it out of the water, and the side walls tear from the weight of the water. The surface is eroding with many imperfections.

WEEK 13
August 23, 2022
The walls of the cup have thinned noticeably and have become more transparent – you can see fingers through the cup wall clearly, and the cup body feels much lighter in weight.

WEEK 17
September 25, 2022
The cup has completely fallen to pieces in the water container, and you have to bury your hand in the soil at the base to find pieces. The material feels light and almost paper-like.
